What to know about Döşemealtı

Döşemealtı sits 20 km north of the city where the first ridges of the Taurus begin. Its altitude keeps it a few degrees cooler than the coast in summer.

Its most striking site is Termessos: built at 1,050 metres on a steep mountain, it is known as one of the few cities Alexander besieged but never took. Its theatre, poised above the valley, counts among the most dramatic ancient structures in Turkey.

Karain Cave holds traces of settlement going back some 500,000 years, making it one of the oldest human shelters in Anatolia; a small museum at the entrance displays the finds. The district is also known for its own traditional carpet pattern.

When to go

Spring and autumn are essential for Termessos: the climb is punishing in summer heat and the path turns slippery in winter rain. April and May bring the pine forest and wildflowers at their best.

Getting there

Twenty kilometres from central Antalya, 25-30 minutes by car. The Termessos entrance is 34 km out on a paved national park road, with a walk up from the car park. Public transport is limited, so a tour or car is advised.

Frequently asked questions

Can Karain Cave and Termessos be combined?+

Yes — they are about 25 km apart on the same national park road. Termessos in the morning and Karain after lunch makes a full day.
